ADHD often persists into adulthood and is a risk factor for other mental health disorders and negative outcomes, including educational underachievement, difficulties with employment and relationships, and criminality. The timely recognition and treatment of children with ADHD-type difficulties provides an opportunity to improve long-term outcomes.

Niall Boyce, Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Psychiatry, and Dustin Graham, Senior Editor, speak to the journal’s authors to explore their research and its impact on people’s health, health care, and health policy in this regular podcast. “For children living with ADHD, inattention can lead to significant impairments across domains, including school performance, home life and interpersonal relationships, yet it is often overshadowed by the more overt symptoms of the disorder and is often not optimally addressed by standard treatments,” said Dr. Scott Kollins, Professor of Psychiatry, Director of the ADHD Program at Duke Many ADHD symptoms, such as high activity levels, difficulty remaining still for long periods of time and limited attention spans, are common to young children in general. The difference in children with ADHD is that their hyperactivity and inattention are noticeably greater than expected for their age and cause distress and/or problems functioning at home, at school or with friends. As a result, awareness of ADHD in adults has rapidly increased and new clinical practice has emerged across the world. Despite this progress, treatment of adult ADHD in Europe and many other regions of the world is not yet common practice, and diagnostic services are often unavailable or restricted to a few specialist centres.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with the delayed development of five brain regions, and should be considered a brain disorder, according to a study published in The Lancet Psychiatry. The study is the largest ever to look at the brain volumes of people with ADHD, involving more than 3,200 people.

For many years, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was thought to be a childhood-onset disorder that has a limited effect on adult psychopathology. However, the symptoms and impairments that define ADHD often affect the adult population, with similar responses to drugs such as methylphenidate, dexamphetamine, and atomoxetine, and ADHD is on the rise, and medication use for ADHD, predominantly stimulants, is as well.
